July 9th Fact Sheet

FACT SHEET July 9, 2012 Bear Cub Fire Bridger-Teton National Forest Fire Information: (307) 543-3900 http://www.tetonfires.com & http://www.inciweb.org Total Acres: 6250 Status: The Bear Cub Fire is burning northeast of Cub Creek and up the South Buffalo Fork River within the Teton Wilderness area. The fire was discovered at 1:30pm on Tuesday, July 3rd. This lightning caused fire is currently burning in mixed conifer with heavy fuel loads of dead and downed trees with beetle/bug kill. Periods of rain were received on both Saturday and Sunday significantly reducing fire behavior. Fire behavior is characterized as creeping into unburned areas within the perimeter of the fire keeping smoke levels heavy especially in the afternoons. Natural barriers including rocky cliffs and the 2011 Nowlin Fire area are working to reduce and contain fire behavior. Crews continue to secure the west flank of the fire to ensure the fire does not get established in the Cub Creek drainage north of Brooks Lake.

Objectives for the Fires:

· Firefighter and public safety is the highest priority during all fire management activities.

· Monitor the north, south, and east flank of the fire to ensure natural barriers that are being used as containment lines hold the fire.

· Prioritize actions on the west flank of the fire to tie 2011 Nowlin fire into natural barriers south of the heel of the fire to keep the fire from moving into Cub Creek and moving south toward Brooks Lake and those values in that area.

Today’s Strategy: Firefighters continue to work along the southwest perimeter completing and enhancing fire line. Fire lookouts were placed to the east and/or southeast of the fire to watch for any spotting that may occur in that area

Forecast: Today: Scattered showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78. Northwest wind 7 to 9 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Tonight: Scattered showers and thunderstorms before midnight. Partly cloudy, with a low around 50. North wind 8 to 11 mph becoming south southeast after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Tuesday: Scattered showers and thunderstorms after noon. Increasing clouds, with a high near 79. South southeast wind 10 to 13 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 40%. Remarks: Smoke is visible over Togwotee Pass and the Continental Divide with periods of heavy smoke primarily in the afternoon hours. Fire Managers are looking to reduce the closure area and down size the incident in the next couple days.

Closures: Trail closures are in effect for trails 6051 and 6054, east of trails 6047 and 6051, and north and west of the Wilderness boundary (see attached map). Please visit http://www.inciweb.org/incident/2980/ for updates and or call (307) 543-3900 for updated trail closure information.
